Volunteer as an Adult Leader

First of all, thank you for your interest in becoming an adult volunteer with the Corsairs.  The Naval Sea Cadet Corps in an excellent program for our nation's youth, but it cannot succeed without dedicated adult volunteers.  Below you will find information on how you can volunteer to become an adult leader with the Corsairs, the different ways you can help out, and the qualifications necessary to join.  The Commanding Officer is the point of contact for all adult volunteer issues.

There are several levels of support that a volunteer can give to the Corsairs.  A brief description of each is below:

Officer:  This is a dedicated member of the unit who serves on one of several staff positions, or as a Division Officer working directly with the cadets.  Officer's wear the Sea Cadet officer uniform and rank, and can receive promotions and awards just as the cadets do.  Officers are expected to attend certain Officer Professional Development (OPD) training events at both the unit and national levels.  All new adult applicants for officer must spend one year as an Instructor.

Instructor:  This is a dedicated member of the unit who serves on one of the staff positions.  Instructors may or may not wear a uniform, Sea Cadet or active duty.  After one year as an Instructor, you may choose to move on as a Sea Cadet officer, or stay as an Instructor.  Instructors may receive Sea Cadets awards, but there is no promotion track available.  Instructors are not required, but are highly encouraged, to attend OPD training events.

Drill Instructor:  This is a dedicated member of the unit who's sole focus is on the training of cadets, both in the classroom or in a hands-on environment.  It is preferred, but not necessary, that Drill Instructors be in the military (active, reserve, or retired), or that they have a strong working knowledge of military life and discipline.  Drill Instructors with the Corsairs MUST wear a uniform, either Sea Cadet or regular military if authorized.  Although not officially a Sea Cadet Officer or Instructor, Drill Instructors will be enrolled as adult leaders in the Sea Cadets for insurance purposes.

Instructor Pool:  Members of the Instructor Pool are those personnel who want to help out the Corsairs, but do not have the time to dedicated fully as in the categories above.  As part of the Pool, you will work closely with the Training/Operations staff to schedule training events in which you can be considered a subject matter expert.  Members of the Instructor Pool are not required to officially join the Corsairs, but they will not receive any of the benefits associated with enrollment.

Friends of the Corsairs:  This the catch-all category for anyone not falling into any of the above categories.  Contact the Commanding Officer for more details on how you can help in this role.
